Faust will be a unique experiment in expanding our understanding of classical theatre.
Pound of Flesh Theatre will create a new adaptation of one of the most iconic stories of all time. The chilling tale of a learned scholar who sells his soul to the devil in exchange for a life of power and excess will find new life in a stage production that takes a bold stab at this classic text.
PFT's goals for the project are threefold: to create a tour-friendly production for three actors and one DJ/composer; to explore the poetry of gesture that is released when classical text is rendered "wordless"; to explore what it means to see the self as commodity. Simply put, the new adaptation will feature three actors, one composer and no spoken words.
PFT wishes to conduct one or more workshops for the creation of the production prior to the rehearsal period. During a workshop period we will explore the theatrical potential in telling a classical play where the actors do not speak, without necessarily creating a "dance" piece. Many variations of the Faust legend will be examined in an effort to render the core story into a narrative that can be delivered using simple human gesture, the power of silence and the rhythms of live music.

The Classical Project (working title) is an exciting new approach to old stories.
PFT will team up with two other Vancouver companies to create a unique, exciting theatre event, to be showcased that the 2010 Paralympics in Vancouver.
Theatre Terrific is a company that creates theatre with artists with disabilities. Through classes, workshops and productions, they strive for a world where the artistic voice of disabled artists is seen, heard, challenged and respected. (www.theatreterrific.ca). Realwheels, a new progressive theatre company with a strong social agenda, created the critically acclaimed "Skydive" in 2006. Committed to the ideals of access and inclusion, Realwheels hopes to serve as a catalyst for tangible social change through it's unique, non-issue based approach to the representation of disability. (www.realwheels.ca).
Together these three companies will create a new piece of theatre that features classical text adapted for actors with disabilities.
How can an actor deliver to an audience the poetry of "To be or not to be" when that actor does not speak? Or how can an actor embody the physical beauty of Juliet when that actor is in a wheelchair? These are the types of challenges the Classical Project will negotiate and, in the process, attempt to discover new approaches to old paths.
